We only popped out, then we were out out in Funchal, Madeira

Updated: Apr 25, 2022

Yes, I have been going on about this since the late nineties, but finally, Madeira's reputation for being a place for older people is no more.

I remember people telling me that in Madeira there was nothing to do after 10pm and Funchal was a destination only for older people.

Funchal night life is not for the ‘faint hearted’ - out out only starts after midnight and goes on until at least 7am or the next day (exceptions during the Covid Pandemic) - all you had to do was pop over to the old quarter after 12am and it would be heaving with locals hanging out on the streets outside of the bars chatting and drinking local unique and strong cocktails to cool tunes before heading to the local ‘mini discos’ (some perched on seaside cliffs, old wine cellars, old salt cellars, lighthouses in hotels... you name it - after 2am the city streets might have gone quieter but everyone would certain be dancing away the rest of the night. Of course this involves a lot of drinking too and drinks here are not meticulously measured - looking silly drunk on the streets was never an option, too embarrassing- unless you were a tourist - summer days might never be the same but at least I have incredibly fabulous memories of the best nights out.

Here's a list of some places I like to visit while in Funchal;
